Summary of Middle East crisis amid attack on Israel by Iran

Post by newspotted »

It's time to "step back from the brink", says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, after Iran's attack on Israel late on Saturday
He tells the UN security council that people in the Middle East face the danger of a devastating full-scale conflict
His comments come as Israel urged the UN to impose "all possible sanctions" on Iran at the same meeting
Tehran launched more than 300 projectiles at Israel, in what it said was retaliation to an earlier strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus
It is unclear how Israel plans to respond, but war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has said it will "exact a price" for Iran's attack when the timing is right
Iran has warned that any "reckless" retaliation by Israel would receive a "much stronger response"
The weekend's attack by Iran - which drew international condemnation - marked the first time it targeted Israel directly from its own soil

Cameron praises skill and bravery of RAF pilots
Cameron is discussing the UK's involvement in the response to Iran's attack.

He says he wouldn't "overstate what we did on Saturday night", but the UK did provide airplanes to backfill for the US as part of another separate joint operation.

That allowed the US to do more to protect Israel, he says, adding that the UK told its pilots if drones and missiles were coming in from where they were they should shoot them down, "and they did".

He says it's a testament to their "skill, brilliance, to their bravery".

Middle East 'on the brink' after Iran's attack on Israel, warns UN chief

Foreign secretary says UK has been pushing to get more aid into Gaza
Cameron is now being asked on how much influence the UK really has in Gaza. He said the UK government has been pushing to get more aid into Gaza, which is now happening.

He also mentions the two recently opened gates and that the UK has trebled its aid budget for Gaza since the war began.

We don't want to see another wave of attacks - Cameron

The foreign secretary is asked what restraint looks like from Israel's point of view. He says it's not having another wave of attacks, and instead putting pressure on Hamas to release hostages, pause fighting in Gaza and flood aid in.

He says the situation needs to be de-escalated, while "getting the whole world to recognise what a malign influence Iran is in the region".

Cameron adds sanctions on Iran and other pressures need to be looked at.
